How to Make your Resume Stand Out

One of the most important things you can do to improve your chances of getting accepted at a new position is to have an excellent resume. Whether you are applying for a new position in a company or seeking to find a new career, there are several important things to consider before you submit your resume.

Work History – Although this may seem obvious, potential employers look for candidates who have a history of finding and keeping jobs. For those recently incarcerated, or have not been employed for a while, this may be discouraging. If this is the case, take some time to think of alternative ways to show your work history. This may include volunteer work or other ways you have positively improved the world around you.

Add Accomplishments – When applying for a new position, potential employers look for not only your work experience but outstanding things you have accomplished. This may vary from a professional achievement or an outstanding moment in one’s personal life. In particular, if you have gaps in your employment history, due to a recent incarceration or otherwise, it is helpful for an employer to see, not only your skills, but your character in your resume.

Add Your Personality – People like to work with those they like. While it is important to be professional, having some of your own voice will help show your personality. Be sure to share your passion, career goals or interests. When you show them some of yourself in your resume, they will be more interested to see if you are a good fit for them.

Place Yourself in the Position – As you submit your resume, take a minute to think about what it would be like to work there. Adding key phrases and language the company may use will help the employer see you in the position.

Show Them Why You Should Be There – Employers look for job seekers that are a strong match for them. If you are looking to submit a job application, explaining why you are a good fit for them is important. Think of ways your skills, experience, or personality will enhance the company you are applying for. Be sure to include them throughout your resume.

Add a Cover Letter – As potential employers read your resume, they will learn about your job experience, accomplishments, education and skills. Many often fail to add their story to one’s resume. Creating a cover letter is an opportunity to create a narrative that will help them see who you are. This cover letter is your opportunity to share things about you that a bullet point list may not reflect.
