The American Correctional Association Conference

Last week we attended the American Correctional Association conference designed to help correctional facilities improve the justice system.

A little history about the ACA, it was founded in 1870 as the National Prison Association, in 1954 the name was changed to the American Correctional Association (ACA). The ACA is the oldest association developed specifically for practitioners in the correctional profession. The first organizational meeting was in Cincinnati, Ohio. The assembly elected then-Ohio Governor and future President Rutherford B. Hayes as the first President of the Association.

The Vision Statement for the ACA: “The American Correctional Association shapes the future of corrections through strong, progressive leadership that brings together various voices and forges coalitions and partnerships to promote the concepts embodied in its Declaration of Principles.”

The Mission of ACA: “The American Correctional Association provides a professional organization for all individuals and groups, both public and private that share a common goal of improving the justice system.”

We were fortunate enough to be able to send four of our members to attend the 151st ACA conference. The conference was from Wednesday to Sunday, August 11-15 in Nashville, TN. They also had a virtual option as well.

Our group of four arrived on Thursday and had a great time! Each day was filled with workshops, activities, events, etc that ACA had scheduled for the conference. On average, each day lasted from about 8 am to 5:30 pm. Once the conference was done for the day our crew was able to explore Nashville.

They really enjoyed everything that the ACA had scheduled. It was awesome to be able to attend an event where everyone was so passionate about improving the justice system. There were so many awesome individuals at the conference that we were able to connect with and share information about TYRO and The Ridge Project.

The ACA holds two conferences each year, one in winter and one in summer. (The main conference is the one held in summer) The next ACA conference will be held Thursday to Sunday, August 4-7, in New Orleans, LA and that will be the 152nd anniversary of ACA. They have dates set all the way up until 2027.
